The village is located at Karangasem, Bali which before the 1970s was known by anthropologists to be one of the most secluded societies of the archipelago (Indonesia).

The people of Tenganan village also known as the original Balinese people, or also called Bali Aga, and they continue to follow their ancient traditions and customs until now. Only those who born in the village can stay in the village and become full members of the community.

The society filled with mysticism and complex local laws, the Bali Aga are strongly attached to their heritage and culture, include about their marriage life. There are rules regarding marriage and anyone who marries outside of the village has to leave. A strict protocol regarding marriages among the kin groups have steered the Tengananese through the genetic perils of intermarriage, although with increasing contact with the outside world these rules have relaxed somewhat.

The village layout and architecture also still traditional. Their houses are built on either side of the north to the south concourse with their doors opening on to it. The entrances of the houses are narrow, only allowing one person to enter or leave at any one time.

However, it is open to aspects of modern life, such as electricity, communication tools and transportation. The children are also encouraged to pursue higher education.

The villagers are famous for their many talents, especially weaving their own fabric called kain gringsing, which is only available from the village. Visitors can also marvel at carved handicrafts and lontar (palm leaf) paintings.
